The Emotional Story Behind a Diagnosis
1 in 17 people will live with a rare disease during their lifetime. Yet most therapists receive little or no training in the psychological impact of genetic conditions.
After nine years working as an NHS genetic counsellor before retraining as a psychotherapist, I continued to notice that genetic information changes more than medical care. It shapes identity, attachment, family relationships, grief and the stories we tell ourselves about the future.
Common reasons people come to therapy:
-
A genetic diagnosis or inherited condition
-
Huntington's disease or predictive genetic testing
-
Pregnancy, IVF, PGT-M or reproductive decisions
-
Ambiguous loss, grief or caregiving
-
Changes in identity or family relationships
-
Anxiety, uncertainty or life transitions

Meet Uruj
Bringing together genetics, psychotherapy and the stories families carry

Before training as a psychotherapist, I spent nearly a decade working in NHS clinical genetics, supporting individuals and families navigating diagnosis, inherited risk, uncertainty and life-changing decisions.
That experience taught me that genetic information is never only medical. Beneath the language of testing, risk and results are often deeper experiences of grief, identity, attachment, family relationships and change.
Today, I bring together genetics, attachment and relational psychotherapy in my work with clients, therapists and organisations. My approach is research-informed, culturally responsive and shaped by an understanding that our stories are also influenced by culture, migration, faith, family roles and intergenerational experience.

The S.A.I.Y.N.A.™ Framework is my genetics-informed relational model for understanding how inherited experiences shape attachment, identity, grief and family relationships.
Developed through years of work across NHS genetics, psychotherapy, research and teaching, it offers a way of making sense of the emotional stories that often sit beneath genetic information.
Whether working with clients, therapists or healthcare professionals, the framework helps bridge the worlds of genetics and emotional wellbeing.
